A residential one week Vocational Guidance Camp for S.S.C. going school children at Sanskar Dham School, Goregaon. A mass Audiometry checks up to detect deafness in school children - over 75000 school children were checked.

A Heart Diseases detection project through E.C.G. covering over 3500 industrial workers of various industries – the E.C.G. recordings followed by lecture series and personal advice to those who needed it Our club received the prestigious Best Vocational Service Trophy of the district for our career guidance project.

The club continued its various service projects. Medical and Vocational guidance camps were our mainstay. One significant achievement was a fund collection drive to collect funds not only for the projects but also for a piece of land for construction of a Rotary Service Centre. Negotiations with F.E. Dinshaw Charity Trust successfully concluded a deal – thanks due to Late Rtn Ram Batra of Bombay North who helped us clinch the deal. An agreement was signed in 1974-75 and this was a major achievement. The E.C.G. evaluation of industrial workers continued in full swing and we covered over 1000 industrial personelle this year.

One Major achievement was “Bhoomi Pooja” for the establishment of Rotary Service Centre at S.V.Road Malad. Last year’s efforts fructified and our GSR Mohanbhai Patel and Ann. Chandaben performed Bhoomi Pooja. Our Club was awarded the prestigious District Trophies for Outstanding Community Service and Outstanding Vocational Service - our week long Vocational Guidance covering over 1000 students in 5 different schools. Our club also joined hands in starting a “Bal-Wadi” in the slums with “Apnalaya” – previously known as Holland-Welfare Centre. The club also published a book on “Career Guidance”

R.I. Director elect Soli Pavri inaugurated the Bal-Wadi project in slums amidst great fanfare. A beautiful structure came up in the midst of Wadarpada slums thanks to “Apnalaya”. For the first time the children in age group of 2 years to 5 years received prime attention, a place to play, a place to learn the alphabet and a centre to give them snacks and primary medical care which continued to be sponsored by the club for seven years. It received “Significant Achievement Award” An article “School is Out – What next?” written by Dr. Anupam Desai appeared in May’77 issue of the Rotarian.

Rotary sevasadan – our Bal-Wadi in slums – was one of the most active projects and received D.G. Dr. Bapusaheb Bhorgay’s appreciation in glowing terms. During the year 5 career guidance seminars were held in schools from Goregaon to Dahisar (2 Day’s seminar). These seminars benefitted hundreds of students of local’s schools. “The technique of appearing for an interview “was also included in the seminar. We continued our Family Planning project - thanks to Dr. Vinoo Desai- and surgeries were performed at Dr. Desai hospital throughout the year. Fellowship programmes also were held throughout the year thus consolidating the club.

Our career guidance camps in schools attracted considerable attention of schools and we continued to give guidance in English, Hindi and Marathi medium schools. The charts prepared by us were loaned to many clubs in far flung areas such as Amalner, Khopoli and others. Our Balwadi project grew in strength. Women of nearby slums were given an opportunity to earn when we provided sewing machines installed at the Balwadi. We also provided free snacks to the Balwadi children every day and this was perhaps the best meal for some children. This also encouraged many more families to send their children to the Balwadi, thus increasing the strength.

A novel fund collection drive through “WALKATHON” or sponsored walk was undertaken on “Western Express Highway” where our 30 participants, Rtns, Anns, children and guests walked to collect funds from sponsors. An I.Y. Exchange student Kathy staying with Rtn. Arvind Patel of Bombay south participated & walked the maximum. Rtn. DR. Anupam Desai & Kathy walked 40 kms that day and a total of over Rs. 50000 collected for the Balwadi project. We received a “Significant Achievement Award” for the project, which was also reported through an article written by Rtn Dr. Anupam Desai in “Rotary News” and was recognized in “The Rotarian” also. Our club sponsored Joe Mascarenhas as G S E member to visit Idaho, USA.

An outstanding project was Career Exhibition at Churchgate Rly. Station, which attracted over 10,000 visitors and gave information to many. The project received “Significant Achievement Award” from Rotary International.

This Project was followed by a career guidance cell established during vacation months to inform and educate the parents and students about the options available after S.S.C. We also replied individually all those who attended the Churchgate exhibition and asked many queries’.

Our Rtn. Past President Dr. Anupam Desai was elected Dist. Governor for 1982-83 during this year. Our Seva Sadan project of Balwadi also continued in full force.

Our Rtns Narendra Patel and Dr. Anupam Desai were interviewed for a radio presentation on Career Guidance – interviewer – Miss Geeta Majlani – daughter of our Rtn. Pranlal Majlani.

 At the Goodwill Conference of R.I. President Stanley McCaffree at Delhi in December 1981, R.I. Pres. Stanley McCaffree inaugurated a comprehensive “Rotary on Stamps” collection of our Rtn. Moti Pariyani and a photograph of this appeared in The Rotarian showing, R.I. President Stan, Rtn. Moti, Rtn. Dr. Anupam Desai and Arvind Patel.

A camp for physically handicapped was held at Goregaon with the help of Sanjay Gandhi Trust. Prs. Shankar was Chairman of COPS.

 

1982-83 Pres.: Kiran Patel

A farmer near Ratouri village was adopted and newer methods of increasing the rice yield taught to bring a fantastic return. This rice was named “Rotary Rice” & about 50 farmers of the neighbouring fields learnt about Paddy cultivation. Pres. Kiran presented R.I. Pres. Elect William Skelton a rice grain of this project. R.I. Director Raja Saboo visited our three days’ residential vocational guidance camp.

Another feather in our cap was the commencement of the construction of our Rotary service centre. A large sum of money was collected for this (8 lacs).

A rare feat achieved by our club giving a governor within 10 years of existence.

A “Grow more food” project on rice cultivation was instituted at Aksa village. Medical assistance programmes were undertaken and regular vocational guidance programme was undertaken besides the vacation programme mentioned earlier. Our family planning project continued with excellent figures. The achievement of the year was the completion of Rotary Service Centre at S.V.Road named L. & M. Rotary Service Centre to recognize the contribution of Shree Lallubhai Patel & Rtn. Mohanbhai I. Patel (our GSR). We held our last meeting of the year at this venue. The centre would house not only the meeting place but would be the venue for our service activities.

With our project of career guidance, seminars exhibitions and promotion continued. We added new dimension – A “Teacher’s Orientation Program” for vocational counselling where teachers were exposed to undertake career guidance in their respective schools.

 The club sponsored a new Rotary club. Rotary club of Bombay Northend was established in May 1985 with Rtn. Kiran Patel as the G.S.R. and Jayprakash Saxena as the charter president. This was our first baby. The feather in the cap came when Inner wheel club of Bombay Northwest was established with Dr. Vishakha Desai as the charter president.

We adopted an orphanage “Prem Sadan” at Marve run by Christian missionaries and started helping in many ways.

We distributed a book “What after S.S.C.?” to 100 local schools covering over 5000 students. The book generated many favourable comments.

Vocational awards were given to the worthy recipients.

This year Rtn. Dr. Manhar Desai – Chairman of TRF committee, initiated a record collection for Rotary Foundation. US$ 8000 was collected this year. We undertook Polio immunization program at Madh village, our adopted orphanage continued to receive help & our family planning program went on increasing.

A village near Balwadi was adopted for our ‘grow more food’ project. Fellowship took on a new meaning and we had a great year.

 

1986 – 87 Pres.: Dr. Vinoo Desai

A new project – “Entrepreneur Development Camp & Seminars” was a highly successful program through which many new entrepreneurs motivated & assisted by a galaxy of experts in various fields including Government clearance, Financial assistance etc. The seminar conducted by the club resulted in successful areas of self-employment for many. The seminar was so useful that the district decided to invite our counsellor to arrange a similar programme at the district level. Medical projects also continued and fellowship blossomed.

The club roster that was brought out was an example of information and was highly appreciated. Family involvement in the clubs’ activities and programmes also brought us closer.

 

1987 – 88 Pres.: Arvind Shah

Our Club’s most prestigious project of the year was Entrepreneur Development project held on a major scale at our service centre. The exhaustive coverage of topics and the coordination of various government and non-government agencies resulted in an interaction par excellence and this project caught the eye of district also.

Our family planning project continued in full bloom and our club received the District Trophy for outstanding F.P. work for the year. We performed both male and female sterilisations in abundance and were rewarded.

Permanent Polio immunization centre was established at Malavni, we also had a centre at Dr. Mrs. Hathi

 

1988 – 89 Pres.: Dr. Gajendra Hathi

A unique “Entrepreneurship awareness for women” attracted over 120 young ladies interested in “self-employment “and this project received widespread acclaim. We provided drinking water facilities at R.T.O., A mass rally with Inner Wheel and Rotaract on 2nd Oct to focus attention on Drug Addiction Awareness saw over 1500 persons walking 8 kms. On the major artillery road from Borivali to Malad. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahulrai Sur, our Honorary Rotarian flagged off the rally.

We started, for the first time an Interact Club at Esplanade High School Kandivali. Our Rtn. Moti Pariyani was selected “Director” of Rotary on Stamps. – A Fellowship activity of International service.

 

1989 - 90 Pres.: Ravindra Bhandari

“Your Heart and you” was published to guide people on the subject of Heart care. Our club received President Hugh Archer’s Distinguished Club Award.

A community level PolioPlus Workshop was held at Malad (East) to promote polio awareness.

We received the “Best Bulletin of Dist. 314” trophy for outstanding bulletin Greenery that has been the apple of many an eye. Our Polio immunization camp at Malad (East) was attended by R.I.President Elect Rajendra Saboo. Pres. Ravindra received the BEST PRESIDENT award from D. G. Dr. R.M. Bhat.

Fellowship flourished and Rotary information was imparted in an excellent manner.

 

 

1990 – 91 Pres. Ramesh Patel

A grand fund collection drive through nine days of Navratri festival program at N. L. High School was a roaring success. We netted over Rs.2.5 lacs & many Rotarians & their families were involved in this project.

Slumber kit distribution started this year by our club & we excelled at this project.

Prem Sadan, an orphanage at Madh village continued to be supported by our club

Our permanent Polio immunizations centers continued to do excellent work and at the regular Pulse Polio days we were active in assisting the authorities to cover the allotted areas with publicity and other help. We also had medical assistance projects and Family Planning programme.

 

1991-92 Pres.: Manu Kothari

The outstanding achievement was inauguration of our very prestigious project – Helping Hands for the Handicapped – an inaugural function was held on Dassera day. The center started with a bang and many physically handicapped started taking advantage of the facilities provided by us this was a year of Rtn. Rajendra Saboo as R.I. president and also a year of Rtn Dr. Vishakha Desai as District chairman (equivalent to dist. Governor of Rotary) of Inner Wheel Dist.314.

Slumber Kit distribution and orphanage projects bloomed during the year.

Our club earned R.I. President’s citation for all round activities in all avenues of service and Pres. Manu was recognised by D.G. Sippy Rao

 

1992-93 Pres.: Kiran Patel

Fellowship bloomed and orphanage project expanded. The project of helping the handicapped continued & our application for a Matching Grant for the project materialized & we received a grant of US$ 5000 (Grant No.3259) from the Rotary Foundation. A grant received from the Foundation meant for a school for the mentally handicapped from distributed through our Rotary club. Our help to the orphanage was expanded and our permanent Polio immunisation centers continued their good work. W e actively participated in Pulse Polio programme and helped B.M.C. achieve the goal.

The family members of Rotarians were actively involved in Club programmes to generate closeness amongst Rotary families.

 

1993 - 94 Pres.: Suresh Patel

Our Helping Hands for the Handicapped project bloomed and saw upsurge of activities & coverage in published in April 1994 issue of Rotary News

Asthma Awareness project was now a more frequently held program. A marriage bureau for the handicapped also gave an extra impetus to our project.

A new & rare program was to hold a “certification Camp” for the handicapped. Normally this facility is available only at All India Institute of Physically Handicapped at Worli. We were able to convince the authorities, the need to give this facility at Malad & a camp was organized for this. Distribution of drugs to T.B. patients at a subsidised rate saw an excellent response and we received a request from Manav Jyot society to help them in their Thalassemia project.

 

1994 - 95 Pres.: Bhaskar Purohit

Rtn. Bhaskar Purohit stepped in as our leader & we continued to improve. The Helping Hands for the Handicapped project reached new heights & Asthma Awareness & Education program was now a regular feature every 3 months.

Our club instituted three “Club trophies” for outstanding work done by Rotarians:

(1) Best Rotarian

(2) Best New Rotarian

(3) Best Committee Chairman.

Our Club was recognised by the D.G. as an excellent club. The Family nights were satisfying. A medical camp was organised at village Kaman Palghar and there was such an overwhelming response that we worked many hours to clear the crowds.

 

1995 – 96 Pres.: Dr. Yatin Shah

Formation of permanent scholarship fund. Rs. 1, 50, 000/- was collected from Rotarians for a permanent endowment corpus for helping the needy students.

Slumber Kit distribution to many students of our area

A massive Rally of over 1000 participants to promote Polio Awareness attracted by many citizens.

On-going Aid to physically Handicapped & to orphanage. Our club, which received a Matching Grant from the Foundation, ($ 5000) fully, utilized the amount this year.

Family planning camps at the premises of Dr. Yatin and Dr. Vinoo Desai. Free T.B. Drug distribution to poor patients. Under the Heart Brigade project of Bombay 2 Ambulances were stationed in our area.

 

1996 - 97 Pres.: Satish Gupta

Silver Jubilee Year began with novel projects. Commemorative Silver Coins were distributed to all club members. Prem Sadan received an extra impetus of aid to the orphans. We supplied wheat flour and other necessities of daily consumption

A chess championship under the aegis of Fischer chess club of Bombay Chess association was organized at our Rotary centre & almost 100 contestants participated.

A trophy named “Soul of Rotary – Fellowship” for clubs up to 75 members was donated by our club to the District to be named “PDG Dr. Anupam Desai Trophy” & to be awarded to clubs from the next Rotary year Asthma awareness programme attracted not only the patients but also the medical fraternity.

 

1997 – 98 Pres.: Dr. Bharat Jobanputra

Amongst the achievements of the year was the establishment of “Anonymous Aids Detection & Counselling Centre” at our service centre under the control of Rtn. Dr. Rashmikant Shah. The project was sustained by ARCON –

Another project of educating the medical practitioners on Asthma and it management was undertaken under the expert guidance of Rtn. Dr. Sunil Shah and this program attracted such a wide response that doctors from many areas of Maharashtra and even Gujarat attended the workshop. Pediatricians also joined in this learning session.

A book on consumer awareness by M.R. Pai was re published.

 

1998 – 99 Pres.: Arvind Patel

An Outstanding project was municipal school children’s eye check-up project where over 6000 students were checked and many students needing spectacles were provided with free spects.

A rally was organised to educate to community on Polio Immunization jointly with Inner Wheel Club of Bombay Northwest.

An educational programme for Rotarians was the A to Z of Rotary conducted by the club jointly with 5 other clubs. Rotary club of Mulund invited us to conduct a similar program for them. We started a free T.B. Drugs distribution programme under D.O.T.S. scheme and Thalassemia detection cum counselling center

We also arranged a series of sex education programmes in local colleges.

 

1999 – 2000 Pres.: Dinesh Kansara

A STD – mobile Van was donated to our AIDS centre and we positioned this van at Dahisar check naka to give service and advice to the truck drivers who wait at the naka. A complete medical check-up of policemen of Malad Police Station was arranged and 124 personnel were checked.

A marriage promotion meet of handicapped youth was a very successful project. 60 people attended this camp.

After a gap of nearly a decade & half we organized a “classification Parade” where 30 members exhibited at our centre the products they manufactured or traded.

“Human chain to chain Polio” was a two kilometre long chain of people on S. V. Road to create awareness of Polio Immunization.

 

2000 – 2001 Pres.: Gautam Acharya

The star project was the beginning of an Eye Hospital establishment procedure where plans were made, applications for Matching Grants from Rotary Foundation were finalised and a major donation from Aspee Charitable Trust of our Rtn. Sharad Patel and Kiran Patel set the ball rolling.

Our STD van at Dahisar checknaka for AIDS awareness and education programme was a great success.

Our club adopted a school at Wada –“Uchat Shikshan Sansthan” and provided food grains and also helped them for their daily needs. .

With four nearby Rotary club and NGOS. Our Club undertook the “Sahyog Medical camp” for Railway Police force where DGE Suresh Rathod motivated us.

 

2001 - 2002 Pres.: Jawahar Thakar

The most important achievement was the fructification of three Matching Grants from the Rotary Foundation totalling a fantastic figure of US$ 1.5 lacs. We succeed in attracting US$ 10,000/- from our district’s D.D.F. (District Designated Fund) of the Foundation.

The construction of the additional floors to our service center building was started to house our Eye hospital & our venue of meetings shifted to Aspee later in the year. One of the outstanding projects of the year was Adivasi Medical assistance programme at Sanjay Gandhi National Park-Borivali

The forest ranger has requested us to help the populace in some other hamlets also.

 

2002 – 2003 Pres.: Dr. Nitin Malkan

The most outstanding & visible project was the establishment of our L.M. Patel Rotary Eye Hospital at our premises on S.V.Road, Malad with a newly constructed & furnished building. The hospital started working from the 7 March 2003.

 The visit of P.R.I.P. Frank Devlyn of Avoidable Blindness Task Force in February 2003 was another feather in the cap.

A unique Rotary meeting entirely conducted by the children of Rotarians was widely appreciated.

We published a booklet - “Careers after retirement”

 

2003 – 04 Pres.: Rasik Shah,

Fire Side meeting held for new members. Two books ’ Where there is a Wheel, there is a Rotary way’ and “Know your Rotary’ by PDG Anupam published. On Bal Din 14th Nov. Children were given topics to speak. A novel idea. Picnic to Malshej Ghat organized. Rotary Service Week programme was well appreciated.

 

2004 – 05 Pres.: Bharat Patel

Picnic to Petron Resort enjoyed by all. 31 Dec celebrated at Bhilad Farm. At International RYLA Nidhi Yatin Shah was selected Miss RYLA. 50 Slumber Kits distributed at Manori School.

Asthma Awareness seminar held for asthma patients. Under Helping Hands for the Handicapped project calipers and prosthesis were given at concessional charges. Under Mega Eye check-up camp 500 patients checked, 325 cataract detacted.

 

2005 – 06 Pres.: Gayatriprasad Bhatt

Main projects Rubella vaccination was carried out at SANDT College Malad, Beach cleaning at Aksha Marve beach with SNDT and JDTS School? students under guidance of PP. Sureshbhai Patel and major projects at Wada there we have distributed uniforms, school Bags and School books, playing equipment’s donated at Wada school in presence of D.G. Rtn. Shrirang.Prabhu.Slumber kits projects also carried out at Wada and met hope this will be enough.

 

2006 - 07 Pres.: Dr. R.M. Shah

Fellowship was at the top. Star Gazing with German telescope, Tarot Card reading, Antakshari, etc. generated much response. Note Books, compass box, rubber, pencil, water bottle, and school bags were given to students at Gagan Giri Tapovan at Manori and at Narvane School at Kandivali. How to enhance performance at SSC’ a coaching seminar two days held for JDT school students. 800 students took advantage. Rubella vaccination for girls was a major project.

 

2007 – 08 Pres.: Kalyanjibhai Shah,

R.I. President Elect Wilkinson visited our Eye Hospital. Dandia Raas on Sharad Purnima organized. Singing talent competition amongst Rotarians and their family held. Public Rally organized for Awareness about Rotary, 120 people took part displaying placards, banners. Cricket team went to Colombo, Sri Lanka to participate in W R C F. A day long Apang Yuva Milan for handicapped organized for search of suitable partner.

 

2008 – 09 Pres.: Paresh Dixit

Apang Yuva Milan was held for Handicapped to search for a suitable partner. Braham Kumari sisters came to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan .Basic educational aid given to Talwada village students. Past R.I. President Frank Devlyn visited our eye hospital. Dr. Linda Balents also joined; her remarks helped us to solve TRF Grant problems. Rangoli competition organized. Rose Week (Rotary Service) Pathological Lab opened at our Eye Hospital. Charter night celebration saw our GSR Mohanbhai Patel visiting our club.

Beach cleaning was organized with Rotaractors to get rid of plastic at Marve and Aksha beaches, posters of ’Say No to Plastic’ distributed. First time under International Youth Exchange programme Akash Joshi went to Brazil.

Overnight picnic at Silent Resort. Char Dham Yatra was very well planned, a Rotary Club meeting was held during the trail. Cricket team went to Aurangabad to play IFCR matches. Medical check-ups for girls at Joana Buthelo’s orphanage. Inner Wheel club celebrated their Silver Jubilee year with a gala event of dance and music. Major Eye check-up for students of three schools, total 700 students checked. Kite flying on 14 Jan.
